Meet the Team.
There are no set 'requirements' to join - excluding age limitations. Despite keeping the role as open as possible, we have a few recommendations based on the work that you'll do.
Be interested in working with other young people (usually 2 years younger), non-judgmentally
Have enough spare time to attend
As outlined above, you must be aged between 14 and 17
We also require that you inform your manager about any medical conditions, if you can't attend some days, if you will be late to a session, or if you aren't able to attend training events.
These recommendations should help you to decide if being a young worker is for you.
If you want to get into the specifics, please take a look at the other questions below.
As a young worker, your primary role is to support those around you to undertake youth work. You'll use a range of activities provided to develop young people's personal, social and educational development.
More specifically, your role is to:
Plan and set up activities/resources
Sign young people in to sessions
Make refreshments and run a tuck shop
Support our Y Services Events
Identify needs, mentor and evaluate sessions with young people
Attend staff meetings 3 times a year
If you are open-minded, able to work as a team and committed to our shared values, youth work is a perfect choice for you.
We're glad to hear it! When you turn 18 and become a legal adult, this changes the process of volunteering for us: you'll become an adult volunteer and be required to complete a Disclosure Barring Scheme (DBS) form. For more information about this, please see our Adult Volunteering Page or email us at recruitment@yservices.co.uk
We have youth centres with junior groups, holiday projects and weekend events across Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Fratton (Portsmouth) and we will discuss your availability and preferences with you.
